On February 21, 1927, a group of fourteen people, all citizens of the United States, with at least one of them being a resident of New York, submitted a "Certificate of Incorporation" to the Justice of the Supreme Court for approval. They named themselves 'directors' until the first annual meeting on October 4, 1927.

They desired to form a corporation commonly called a Board of Trade. Their stated purpose was to establish the “New York State Society of Medical Masseurs, Inc..” Many years later the name was changed to The New York State Society of Medical Massage Therapists, Inc. (NYSSMMT).

The Society’s objectives are:

1. To educate its members and to further a high standard for the profession of Massage Therapy.
2. To seek enactment of laws to promote a high standard for the profession of Massage Therapy.
3. To uphold the ethical standards for the profession of Massage Therapy and for its members.
4. To prevent abuses by illegal and unethical practitioners.
5. To promote education about Massage Therapy and professional recognition by other health and medical care providers and the public at large.

To further these ends:

1. The Society holds workshops and conferences during the year, to educate LMT's and other health care professionals on varied health topics related to massage.
2. The Society publishes a newsletter four times a year of approximately 40-50 pages. They mail approximately 1600 copies each issue to members, advertisers and the 17 New York State Massage schools for the LMT students.
3. They have a telephone referral line service for the public.
4. They are listed online at Superpages.com on-line, so our members are available for referrals.
5. They hold 4-6 General Meetings a year for their membership, with two-three hour workshops after each meeting.
6. They created the 'Illegal Massage Task Force" that has been instrumental in educating shop owners who unknowingly rented space to 'illegals' practicing massage in their shopping malls, flea markets, and other public locations.

Their mission is to educate everyone, and thereby make it impossible for anyone not licensed by the State of New York, to practice massage on the public.
