Thoughts and Insights on Spa Equipment
by Richard Eidson

There is a perfection in nature that defies improvement. You can see it not only in the elegant logarithmic structure of the chambered nautilus but in the delicate spiral of a fiddlehead fern, the Parthenon, the Great Pyramid, and the Mona Lisa's beguiling smile. You can hear it in classic chords, in the music of Bach, in the song of a lark. The ancients revealed it. The masters revered it. And futurists, like Buckminster Fuller, adapted it in unique and innovative ways--such as the dynamic tension and integrity of tensegrity--that have changed our lives forever.

It is the Golden Ratio--a marriage of old world craftsmanship and new world technology. And everything we build is based on it.

Quality, integrity, strength and beauty--these are the concepts which are found in the chambered nautilus. This is the essence of the Golden Ratio which we as a company envision as not only our name but our goal.

Once you've appreciated our unique "Golden Ratio" design--the morticed joinery, the innovative "PowerStrut"™ construction, the simple lack of moving parts, the solidity, the detail, the elegant finishing; once you've experienced the convenient set-up, ease of operation and its silent and ever-dependable performance; then, all you and your clients will notice is your massage.

That's as it should be.

While other makers talk as if their equipment were the most important thing on your mind, we know differently.

After all, you're really not purchasing a table or chair. You're buying what that piece of equipment will enable you to do. You invest in excellent equipment, because that's what supports you--literally--in doing your very best work. Truth is, our real product is not tables, chairs or accessories--It's your work, your art. And we do our best--so that you can do yours.

It all began 20 years ago when John Fanuzzi, founder and president of Golden Ratio, started listening with an open heart to the needs of his customers. Coupling inspired vision with creative genius, he added his deep appreciation for the innate beauty in nature to all of his creations. In fact, this respect for the beauty and laws of nature inspired the naming of the company Golden Ratio Woodworks.

John talks about Golden Ratio's beginning:

“Things semi-started in 1979. I had been a carpenter and got involved in polarity and massage. One of my fellow classmates said “you can build a table” and that was the birth of the first table. Simple equation: Carpenter + Healer =Treatment tables.

“Golden Ratio Woodworks actually started in 1982 just outside of Philadelphia with a humble start. I can remember building portable tables in the basement nights and weekends while working as a construction manager during the day. After a year and a half I had enough business to quit construction and work full time on tables and in fact hire my first employee, Raul, who is still with GRW at 78 years old.

“The company has grown from about 50 tables a year (I) to about 50 tables a day (WE) with about 115 in-house employees. The company’s reputation has been built primarily on being on the cutting edge with new products and following the Golden Rule with our service. We have come a long way in our accounting practices, our sales policies, and just simply listening to our customers. Being up front with employees, and in fact using an open book management system has paid off.

“More than 75% of our products are custom made--which is an added special, takes a little more work--but shows our customers we are willing to go the extra mile. We are always trying harder for efficiency and now we are finally in a position to make a quantum leap.

“In October 1998 we moved into a new facility which added 30,000 sq. ft. for manufacturing. Located on the Yellowstone River in Emigrant, Montana, we not only have a building that will increase our production efficiency by 10 to 20%, but we have added new offices with triple the space and a showroom! Our workers will have a spectacular working environment with clean air, water, and mountains.

“We converted our prior building to a mini conference center for workshops, seminars, and education along with some guest rooms. It will be a neat place to attend trainings—there is skiing, fishing, rafting, hiking, snowmobiling, etc. close by so our guests might like a little change in climate from the big cities. There will also be professional video services in house.

Building upon the standard of the golden ratio we have become known as the industry standard for the very finest in massage, bodywork and therapy tables. Quality, innovation and enduring beauty are our bywords—and love, compassion and gratitude are the qualities we build with. Knowing that discerning therapists demand quality, Golden Ratio has continued to hire gifted hands and caring hearts to assure that your expectations are met and exceeded.
