CranioSacral
Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of whole-body evaluation
and care that helps normalize the environment of the craniosacral
system. This core body system extends from the skull, face and mouth
down through the spine to the sacrum or tailbone area.
In its most basic
sense, the craniosacral system functions as a semi-closed hydraulic
system. It bathes the central nervous system in cerebrospinal fluid
pumped rhythmically around the brain and spinal cord at a rate of
6-12 cycles per minute. One of the most useful techniques in CranioSacral
Therapy the Still Point utilizes this fluctuating
flow of fluid to release restrictions in the craniosacral system.
The results can have a therapeutic effect on the central nervous
system and the entire body.
Still Point refers to an extended pause in the rhythmical activity
of the craniosacral system, which can occur either spontaneously
or be induced by the CranioSacral Therapist.
To induce a Still Point, the practitioner uses very delicate tissue
techniques to restrict the flow of cerebrospinal fluid through the
craniosacral system until it stops completely. This interruption
causes a momentary buildup of fluid. When the tissues are released
and the fluid begins to flow again, it gently flushes
the system, causing the membranes to stretch a bit more to release
any inherent restrictions or adhesions.
Still Points can also be self-induced using a simple device called
the Still
Point Inducer,
made of soft latex material. Choose a comfortable surface
sofa, bed or floor and lie on your back. Place the Still
Point Inducer under your head in line with your ears and allow the
weight of your head to rest on it. Then close your eyes and relax
for 10 to 20 minutes. Its an easy way to stimulate CranioSacral
Therapy Still Points to relieve headaches and muscle pain, reduce
stress, and promote a general sense of well-being.
