Few structures in the human body have as much influence over its ability to function properly as the brain and spinal cord that comprise the central nervous system. And few systems have as much impact on the brain and spinal cord as the membranes and fluid that surround and protect them — the craniosacral system.

Every day the body endures stresses and strains and the structures compensate. Unfortunately, these compensatory changes can often cause fascia to tighten and distort the craniosacral system, which in turn can put pressure on the brain and spinal cord.

Nearly 30 years ago I developed a set of gentle techniques to release those restrictions and free the central nervous system to operate at peak ability. Called CranioSacral Therapy, the approach was devised after years of research and testing at Michigan State University.

Practitioners use a soft touch — roughly the weight of a nickel — to evaluate the craniosacral system. Specific techniques are then used to release any restrictions or imbalances found, creating the best possible environment for the brain and spinal cord. This naturally helps eliminate the negative effects of stress, strengthen resistance to disease, and enhance overall health and well-being.

CranioSacral Therapy has been used successfully by thousands of practitioners to relieve a variety of sensory and/or motor neurological dysfunctions. It's been used effectively on headaches, neck and back pain, TMJ dysfunction, chronic fatigue, motor-coordination difficulties, endogenous depression, eye problems, hyperactivity, central nervous system disorders and many other problems.

Over the coming months, I'll introduce you to some of the basic techniques involved in CranioSacral Therapy. With proper education, you can easily integrate this effective modality into your current practice. To learn more call The Upledger Institute: 1-800-233-5880, ext. 92015, or visit www.upledger.com.
